IGS is a special type of image-guided surgery using imaging techniques to locate and remove tumor lesions in the body. In IGS, a real-time, intraoperative, low-dose, computed tomography (CT) imaging system is often employed during the surgical procedure to provide a live view of the patient’s internal anatomy. Prior to the IGS procedure, the patient’s body is typically imaged using a diagnostic CT imaging system. The diagnostic CT imaging system provides image data that is used to plan and perform the IGS procedure. During the IGS procedure, the planned surgical procedure is performed in accordance with the image data provided by the intraoperative CT imaging system. After the surgery is completed, post-operative CT imaging is used to view the results of the surgery.
In the past, when an IGS procedure was performed, a technologist would be required to switch on and configure the intraoperative CT imaging system. This was done prior to the start of the IGS procedure, but remained in the on state until the IGS procedure was completed. The technologist then returned to the diagnostic CT imaging system and configured it so that image data from the diagnostic CT imaging system would be transferred to the intraoperative CT imaging system for the IGS procedure.
However, the current configuration procedure for the intraoperative CT imaging system is cumbersome and time consuming, since the technologist has to switch on the intraoperative CT imaging system, perform the configuration of the intraoperative CT imaging system, and then go to the diagnostic CT imaging system to transfer the image data. As a result, a significant amount of the surgical procedure is occupied by the technologist performing this configuration procedure. This increases the length of time that the patient is under anesthesia and the length of time that the patient spends in the surgical suite, which, in turn, increases the cost of the surgical procedure.
